Worked examples
720 R&W / 700 Math
(1440 + 700) ÷ 10 = 214. Qualifies in Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee and every state at 214 or below for the Class of 2027.
740 R&W / 800 Math
Math is capped at 760: (1480 + 760) ÷ 10 = 224. Clears every state.
680 R&W / 780 Math
(1360 + 760) ÷ 10 = 212. The 780 does not help beyond 760; a 700 R&W would have added 4 points.
Calculator questions
Why are SAT scores capped at 760?
The PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 760 per section, so NMSC caps SAT sections at 760 to keep Alternate Entry students on the same 48–228 Selection Index scale. A 770, 780 or 800 all count as 760.
Does NMSC superscore the SAT for Alternate Entry?
No. One sitting. If you take the SAT more than once on accepted dates, NMSC uses the best single administration.
What SAT score guarantees National Merit Semifinalist?
A Selection Index of 223 clears every state for the Class of 2027; that is, for example, 760 R&W and 710 Math (152 + 71 = 223), or 750 R&W and 730 Math. Cutoffs change each year, so aim above your state's five-year high.
Is the total SAT score what matters?
No. Reading & Writing counts double. A 1460 split 760/700 is a 222; the same 1460 split 700/760 is only a 216.
